The small car market around $20,000 is made up solely of fully imported models and with the 5 per cent tariff drop on January 1 some of the best small car sellers have become even more competitive.
* Toyota's Corolla leads the bunch - the entry-level 1.8-litre manual Ascent sedan and five-door hatch with air-conditioning officially dropped $740 on January 1 to $19,750 plus on-road costs. However, Pennant Hills Toyota now has a number for $18,990 plus on-roads, a $760 saving. Automatic adds $1850, metallic paint $215. * Nissan's Pulsar sedan already had the tariff drop factored in before January 1. The manual 1.8-litre ST with air-conditioning is generally $18,990 plus on-roads. However, Steve Jarvin Nissan at Haberfield currently has a selection for $16,990, a $2000 saving. Automatic adds $1900, metallic paint $180.* Hyundai's 2.0-litre manual Elantra sedan and five-door hatch with air-conditioning dropped by $500 on January 1 to $18,490 plus on-road costs. It has now also received $1000 in free accessories. Sydney City Hyundai at Alexandria has added free registration and CTP Insurance plus free five-year roadside assistance - additional value $700.
